KONAWEB

Welcome!

Makahiki Farms grows, harvests, processes and sells award-winning Estate 100% Kona Coffee. Spend a moment to browse our site to learn about our farm and about 100% Kona Coffee and why it is so special.

Our farm is privately owned and operated. We do most of the work personally. It is truly a labor of love. We pride ourselves on attention to detail and on the health of our orchard.

Our coffee is entirely handpicked. It is processed separately from the product of other farms so you can count on the quality. Smooth and flavorful, never bitter.

What's New! (May 5, 2008)

Happy Cinco de Mayo !

The biggest "new" thing is that we have upgraded our web site to include a more sophisticated and better integrated shopping cart. We still accept Paypal but can now accept credit cards directly through our merchant account with Authorize.net. Either way is secure and reliable. Your card information is entered and accepted by the payment processor on their secure site. We never see nor store your sensitive information. If you choose to create an account here, your profile will contain your billing and shipping addresses, email address and contact preferences. That saves you from having to enter it again the next time you shop with us. As always, your comments and feedback are welcome. Let us know how you like the new cart.

I just came in from fertigating and I'm dirty and tired. Each time we fertigate, which is approximately every two weeks, we do a little irrigation system maintenance as well as inspect the rows of trees. The trees are looking pretty good and another blossoming is a few days away. Some of the trees are getting heavy with unripe cherry already so we will have to start thinking about getting our supply of bamboo poles ready. We prop up the heavy verticals using bamboo so the branches don't break. The reason we use bamboo is that it is very strong, easy to cut to the proper length but also renewable. The poles eventually break down due to the stresses of the heavy tree and the exposure to sun light. So we just mulch it when we mulch the year's prunings.

We have not yet completed suckering and vertical selection for this year. The size of the suckers is just now getting to the point where it needs to be done which is a little bit behind our usual growth pattern. This is most likely due to the relatively late finish to the harvest so we were about a month later to prune this year. I suckered a few trees while I was in the orchard today and the growth is exactly right for being able to pull off the excess suckers while what will remain is good and strong. If you sucker too early you risk having all the young shoots break off or get damaged in the process.

Roasting

We usually roast your coffee for you on demand. Once you place your order, we roast and package it for shipment. However, we have had a mechanical problem with our small roaster and are waiting on parts from the mainland. In the meantime, I have arranged for our neighbor who is a master roaster to roast some of our coffee for us.

The roast-to-order business has been an overwhelming success. The big news is we have ordered a larger shop roaster that can roast from 1 pound to about 7 pounds at a time. The new roaster should arrive by freight from Idaho the first or second week of June.

Coffee Subscriptions Get 10% Off

Effortless and absolutely the freshest Kona coffee. We will roast and ship your order on a periodic basis. Just as an example, we can do a standing order of 2 eight ounce packs of Estate the 15th of every month. Customizable to your needs. If you'd like it roasted a little darker or a little lighter, your subscription can be exactly how you like it. Just call or email and let us know what you'd like and how often and we will make it happen. No need to go online to place re-orders. Your freshly roasted 100% Kona coffee will be charged to your credit card at 10% off the regular price and shipped to you as often as you prefer. Great for the individual coffee lover as well as the company coffee break room.
