Giving Back to the Community

As the owners of Makahiki Farms, we are proud to give something back by supporting several local and national charities.

Breast Cancer Research

Makahiki Farms donates $1 of every half pound of roasted coffee we sell to breast cancer research. We have been personally touched by this insidious disease and look forward to a day that we will no longer lose friends and loved ones to cancer. We've met some really wonderful people in this fight and hope that by giving what we can, we'll help at the very least turn breast cancer into a chronic treatable disease without the fear of what treatment does to us, fear of when it might come back or loss of one's sense of self.

Kona Hospital Foundation

We have been donating a Kona coffee gift basket (the same one you can order here on our site) to the annual benefit silent auction for the Kona Hospital Foundation. The most recent fund-raiser is for renovations to the Kona Community Hospital Emergency Room.

Kona Community Hospital Hope Event

Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Radiation Oncology Department at Kona Community Hospital holds the Hope Event. This event is for cancer patients (any kind of cancer), their families and friends as well as the medical staff who care for them. The event includes great food and music, massages, hair cuts, wig purveyors and a few speeches of gratitude. Makahiki Farms has donated a Kona coffee gift basket as a door prize to this event each year.

Oncology Infusion Center

A while back we discovered that due to the tight budget at the hospital, the chemotherapy infusion center staff has been having to supply their own coffee for themselves as well as the patients. Getting chemo is no fun and sometimes takes many hours or all day. We want to make sure that everyone there gets to drink the "good stuff". For the last several years, Nancy has been doing a few extra batches in the roaster or making a batch bigger so that we can keep the coffee pot at the infusion center full.

Hawaii Island Humane Society

"The mission of the Hawaii Island Humane Society is to promote respect for all animals, prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the relationship between humans and animals." Each year in the Spring they hold a fund-raiser called Tropical Paws with a gala dinner, silent and live auctions. For several years now we have donated our Kona coffee gift basket for the auction. Our beloved cats, Sandy & Pua, as well as Penny the Wonder Dog are all adoptees from HIHS. Find out more about HIHS at http://www.hihs.org.

Operation Warrior Wake-Up/ Operation Jarhead Java

Operation Warrior Wake-Up s is a grass-roots effort by some Kona coffee farmers to provide Kona coffee to Hawaii-based U.S. troops deployed overseas. The soldiers needed a place to go to unwind, socialize, read donated magazines and have a cup of great Kona coffee. The chaplains have set up a coffee bar. We donate 3 pounds of our Estate whole bean each month. Many thanks go to Robert Gowan for spearheading it. He collects all the coffee and mails it to Iraq and Afghanistan along with other useful items such as grinders, coffee makers and even ice-cube trays. Troops out on the front lines have been getting ground Kona coffee along with specially-made mesh bags in order to brew in the field without having to resort to using their socks.
