What's
New! (December
12, 2006)
We've
had the current season's coffee that has been harvested so far milled
and graded. The grading sheets are excellent so we are very pleased.
We have to credit our picking crew this year. They are very diligent
and conscientious about the quality.
We
really would also like to send our appreciation to our numerous
coffee aficionados who keep coming back to our site and placing
their orders. We are so happy to know that you like our coffee and
want more. It makes the hard work worthwhile.
Something
coming up in 2007 will be our own pulping mill right here on the
farm. We will be able to process the coffee cherry by pulping, fermenting
and drying it ourselves. This gives us even greater control on the
quality. Let us know if you plan to visit the Kona area and would
like to come by and see the farm. We love to meet our customers
and show folks around.
Happy
Holidays!
We've
already fulfilled most of our gift orders for the season but it
isn't yet too late. We do our shipping via USPS Priority Mail, but
we can do Federal Express if you place your order by phone.
Wishing
you a peaceful and healthy holiday season and best wishes for a
great 2007!
What's
New! (November
2, 2006)
We
just finished weighing in the most recent round of picking. There
is still quite a lot of coffee on the trees. The harvest is just
very late this year due to the weather. The days have been sunny
lately which is helping it to ripen. We still have at least two
more rounds on the trees. The picking crew we have this year is
very good and so our quality is looking great.
Something
else new is that we now take credit cards by phone and in person.
If you are uncomfortable with using a credit card online, just give
us a call toll free at 800-896-0350.
We
have entered our coffee in the Gevalia Kona coffee cupping competition
at the Kona
Coffee Cultural Festival. The festivities begin tomorrow, with
the official cupping on Wednesday and Thursday. Wish us luck.
Update
(October
15, 2006)
We
wanted to let you know that we are fine after the big earthquake.
Only a little damage to rock walls and some things fallen from shelves.
The farm is also fine. I ran around the whole orchard on the ATV
and the irrigation system is intact. Just had to dodge some dislodged
rocks. Just had another aftershock (3:10 pm) and I must say it is
quite unnerving. We are very thankful no one has been seriously
injured so far as the reports keep coming in.
What's
New! (October
2, 2006)
We've
had several rounds of picking and the beans this year are quite
big and high quality. The harvest is not quite as early as it has
been in the past due to the weather last Spring. There is still
a lot of coffee on the trees yet to ripen and we had a nice big
round in September. The trees look great. We believe that healthy
trees produce the best tasting coffee.

Our
donation to breast cancer research is done year round and on every
half pound of coffee we sell. We do not raise our coffee price to
cover the donation amount. Finding a cure for breast cancer is very
important to us as our lives have been changed by this disease.
Something
else new is that we now take credit cards by phone and in person.
If you are uncomfortable with using Paypal, just give us a call
toll free at 800-896-0350.
We're
in the process of implementing a new shopping cart that processes
credit cards directly and securely. Paypal will still be an option
if you prefer it.
Cream
of the Crop 2006 (updated July 10, 2006)
We
participated in the Cream of the Crop coffee tasting again
this year. We took third place in both the Chef's Choice and
in the People's Choice voting (tied). We are very happy and
excited to have our coffee recognized. The annual event took place
from noon until 4 on Saturday, July 8 and was located at the Four
Season's Resort Hualalai amphitheater. We really like that location
as it is outside under the trees. Many people from the Big Island
and vacationers came by to taste Kona coffee from over 20 farms
and then vote for their favorite. Thank you to all who voted for
our coffee!
What's
New! (July
2, 2006)
We're
getting close to our first round of harvest for the season. The
trees look great. They are very green and healthy and heavy with
coffee cherry. The ripening is a bit slower this year than the last
few years. We've had lots of cloud cover and a small amount of rain
almost every night. This should make the beans dense and big, just
like they should be.
The
picking crews should be arriving on the island within the next few
weeks so we will be right on time. There are a few trees with some
red cherry right now but not enough to pick just yet. We suspect
our first picking will be the third or fourth week in July.
What's
New! (April
21, 2006)
Hello
Everyone!
As
you might have seen on the national weather news that the Hawaiian
Islands had quite a bit of severe weather in February and March.
Here in Kona on the west side of Hawaii Island, we faired better
than most of the rest of the state. We did have a couple of wild
storms including some high winds and hail (yes, hail in Hawaii).
Our total amount of rain here at the farm was around 6 inches and
it was badly needed. Since then it has been showering in the evening
or at night which is just what the coffee trees love.
We
had a crew come in to do a little bit of storm clean up in the orchard.
Some of our trees tilted a bit and are staked up now and some of
the young verticals got broken. But the trees are very resilient
and are perking right back up. We had another flowering just last
week and the fruit from earlier flowerings appears to have set nicely.
We will probably have to stake more trees earlier this year due
to the storm weakened branches. We already have a supply of bamboo
ready. And just this week the trees got some foliar fertilizer.
We certainly baby them.
Don't
forget Mom & Dad
Our
Kona coffee is a great gift for Mother's Day or Father's Day. We'd
love to put together a gift basket for Mom. Perhaps a coffee mug
and half pound of our rare and wonderful Peaberry would please her.
Would Dad like a Makahiki Farms T-shirt and a bit of Extra Fancy?
Give us a ring or drop us an email. We would love to work with you
on that perfect gift.
What's
New! (January
24, 2006)
Happy
New Year Everyone!
The
weather has turned very dry here in west Hawaii and so we are irrigating
quite heavily. The dry weather keeps the weeds away and the trees
are still looking well.
The
pruning crew just arrived a few minutes ago. They will spend about
three days evaluating every tree and choosing which of the four
verticals is oldest and needs to be removed. They will also remove
excess suckers and tag any trees that need to be replaced.
Pruning
is done every year at this time and is essential to keeping the
trees healthy and ready to produce the highest quality fruit in
the upcoming season. It also keeps the trees at a manageable height
so that they can be easily tended and picked when the time comes.
Does
your Valentine like to indulge?
Our
Kona coffee is a yummy and decadent gift for Valentines Day. We'd
love to put together a gift basket for your valentine. Perhaps a
coffee mug and half pound of our rare and wonderful peaberry would
set their heart aglow. Give us a ring or drop us an email and we
would love to work with you on that perfect gift.
